What does Hard Water do to your Home?
When water has high levels of minerals like calcium and magnesium, it is considered hard. Hard water can have several damaging effects on your home that include:
Scale refers to the dissolved minerals from your water and can leave residue on your water heater, fixtures, pipes or other appliances. This is dangerous because clogs can form, causing permanent damage. In many cases, pipes and appliances that are exposed to excess scale will need to be replaced.
Hard water also makes it more difficult for soap to lather. This creates an issue when you are bathing, showering or doing the dishes or laundry. In addition to difficulty lathering, hard water also creates a slimy scum when in contact with soap that’s hard to clean.
A water softener will prevent these issues from occurring and help keep your plumbing appliances working efficiently for a long time.
Signs You Need a Water Softener
If you notice any of the following signs in your home, you may be seeing the negative impact of hard water. Some of the most visible signs include:
- Bad tasting and smelling water
- Scale in your pipes or on fixtures and appliances
- Difficulty lathering soap
- Yellow stains on your clothing after they come out of the wash
A water softener uses a brine solution created by a tank filled with salts to neutralize the harmful minerals and stop these issues from occurring.

Sediment
The Whole House Filter provides cleaner water into your home while protecting your water heater, washing machine, refrigerators, ice-makers and other appliances from the harmful build-up of sediments, dirt and rust. If sediment problems are present in your well water supply or if you live in areas where dirt and rust particles are a problem, this is what you are looking for.
Reverse-Osmosis
Reverse osmosis, commonly abbreviated as RO, was first introduced in North America through home purification systems in the 1970s. This purification method uses a semipermeable membrane, which filters out water contaminants and various compounds. If the particle is larger in size than water molecules, it’s trapped by the membrane.
Conversely, particles smaller than water molecules typically remain in the drinking water, so RO systems effectively remove harmful contaminants such as lead, arsenic and nitrates.
They also remove a high percentage of added fluoride, which has become a controversial issue. Fluoride is added to many municipal water systems in the United States to deter cavities, although too much of it is toxic and leads to a variety of side effects. RO systems come in a variety of different sizes and filter options.
Give us a call and we can find you a system that fits your budget and level of filtration.
Traditional Water Softener
Water softening by definition is removing calcium Ca2 and Magnesium Mg2 from the water through a process called ion exchange. The process of ion-exchange uses a polymer resin bed which gives off a sodium or potassium particle in exchange for hardness minerals. This process removes water hardness from the water eliminating scale build up, protecting appliances, water heaters, plumbing fixtures, improving the effectiveness of soaps and detergents.
Water softeners operate typically by two common methods.
A timed water conditioner regenerates based on a set number of days similar to an irrigation timer. A more effective and efficient Demand Initiated Regeneration (DIR) water softener regenerates according to actual water usage saving water and reducing salt/potassium usage by as much as 50%.
